Presumption of Innocence – Conference

9 Nov
Recent legislation such as the Criminal Justice Acts 2006 and 2007 and the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009 has arguably seen the progressive erosion of the right to be presumed innocent. Against this background, DIT is holding a free public conference on the Presumption of Innocence in association with the Law Society of Ireland. The
conference will be held on Saturday, 27th November, Room 4027, DIT Aungier Street from 9am-3.30pm. The conference aims to provide a space in which to reflect on the impact of these reforms and the justifications advanced for them. The conference will be chaired by the Hon. Mr. Justice Adrian Hardiman
of the Irish Supreme Court and will also be addressed by several other
national and international experts in this field. These include: Dr. Mary Rogan, DIT; Dr. Claire Hamilton, DIT; Jimmy Martin, Department of Justice; David Langwallner BL, GCD, Innocent Project Ireland; Paul Anthony McDermott BL; ‘Sunny’ Jacobs and Peter Pringle; Niamh Gunn; Prof. William Schabas, UCG; and Dr. Michael Naughton, Bristol University, Innocence Network, UK.
